about

Downtempo maestro Manu Zain, known for melancholic and contemplative compositions, has been a fixture in our artist roster for many years now; his signature style of stirring piano keys, backed by soaring, layered pads, never fails to strike an emotional chord. His new three-track "Breathe" EP continues to explore the deep emotional crevices of the human condition.

Kicking off the "Breathe" release is "Pe'ahi," so named for the legendary Maui big-wave beach. In the early going, the arrangement reveals sweeping pads alongside a quaking bass, which establish a sense of foreboding, as the listener awaits the approaching storm. Among the gathering clouds, brief synth notes glint like slowly falling raindrops. Soon the storm begins, courtesy of thunderous bass swells. Ultimately, the listener finds reprieve in the steadiness of the raindrops, as well as the climactic piano notes near the song's pensive (and cathartic) conclusion.

The title cut awakens with subtle, yet piercing piano keys, evoking the gray fog that accompanies a deep sense of indecision. The ominous soundscape continues to subtly crescendo, until the listener is suddenly met by a new piano theme, which seems to signal a moment of revelation. In the song's final act, the poignant piano theme, backed by a gentle drum, enables the listener to contemplate the journey ahead with a clear mind and emboldened spirit.

In "Wanderlust," deeply resonating piano keys elicit a state of introspection. Faintly echoing in the innermost recesses of the human psyche, elements of percussion are carefully added to the composition, helping to lead the listener down the path to greater understanding of the self. As we near the journey's conclusion, crystalline piano keys herald a sense of spiritual clarity and, perhaps, fulfillment.
