The stark landscapes and crisp climates that characterize the winter months can clarify, if not intensify, our emotions. Music released this time of year has a tendency to be especially raw and poignant, which is certainly the case for the four exceptional cuts featured on "Winter Selections 02."
Hailing from Morocco, the promising duo Mhammed El Alami & Amine Maxwell kick off the EP. Both veterans in the trance scene, their debut collaboration on our imprint showcases a more chilled, proggy, and sensitive side to their music. In "Fireflies," it's easy to envision the night sky aglow: an emotive lead arpeggio and piano theme, later joined by a soulful guitar riff, are embedded in ethereal pads.
Appearing on Silk for the first time in nearly two years, young British sensation Joshua Ollerton returns with the mellifluous and groovy "Shifter." Ollerton crafts an evocative, after-hours soundscape in the early going, courtesy of distant vocal echoes, fluttering synths, and a lush piano theme. Meanwhile, a funky groove offers the composition an upbeat, yet gentle and steady swing. In the song's latter half, the gorgeous vocal effects are fully revealed, to mesmerizing effect.
Suonare, already an established name within the melodic progressive house community, presents "Destiny," the Argentine duo's official Silk debut. The song sinks into cavernous territory in the early going, as a vintage deep house bassline underpins a harmonious soundscape, replete with disparate melodic layers. In the main break, a breathtaking symphonic theme emerges, followed by the reappearance of the deliciously deep groove.
Finally, Flexible Fire and Diego Aguilar, another promising Argentine duo, presents "Something About." Previewed on last year's "Only Silk 04" compilation, the track offers a deep and sensual soundscape, featuring the titular vocal hook and a variety of late-night, jazz-influenced flourishes.
