about

The stark landscapes and crisp climates that characterize the winter months can clarify, if not intensify, our emotions. Music released this time of year has a tendency to be especially raw and poignant, which is certainly the case for the four exceptional cuts featured on "Winter Selections 05."

Label newcomer Jake Kaiser kicks off the release with "Sequoia," so named for the awe-inspiring giant trees that reside near the Californian composer's native San Francisco. A variety of organic percussive elements are soon joined by a gently rising melody, the beauty of which may effectively summon the creatures of the inner forest. Calming vocals provide a sense of warmth, as we traverse the solemn and often unforgiving landscapes of the winter season.

Wassu, the NYC-based rising talent, makes his label debut with the mesmerizing "Dhavu." A distinctly subterranean affair, the foreboding soundscape, which includes the distant echoes of water droplets, evokes a descent into the catacombs. The track simultaneously embraces a secondary connotation of "underground," courtesy of its late-night dancefloor aesthetic and hypnotic deep-progressive groove. Icy pads reflect the coolness of the season, particularly in the moments when one finally emerges from the club in the early-morning hours and takes a deep breath.

Russian label veteran Stan Chetverikov has become a regular contributor to our seasonal EPs. His latest downtempo offering, "Anthracite," is a lesser-known name for (hard) coal, and much like its namesake, this track burns steadily with emotive energy. The midpoint breakdown employs the use of cosmically swaying synths, which illuminate the aurora borealis, as the listener sits back in quiet contemplation.

Closing out the release, Irish composer Aleyum makes a memorable return to our imprint with "Astral Escape." Heavy breaks, combined with celestially captivating effects, evoke both the brittle cold and glacial beauty of the season. Elegant strings fill in the silent moments and allow for a somber reflection on the time passed this year, while also ushering in the hope of new opportunity in the year to follow.
